gabriel greco / data engineer

I’m not a designer. I’m the data guy.

Yes, this website was AI-generated.

I build systems that turn the messy web into trustworthy data: large-scale crawlers, orchestration, bronze → silver → gold models, and regulatory intelligence products.

It crawls the site. You take home JSON + PDF.

I build both sides of regulatory intelligence: the ingestion layer that turns documents into structured knowledge, and the RTI data products that turn public evidence into defensible indices.

Labrynth / regulatory AI

Building the ingestion layer behind GraphRAG

My main focus is an ingestion platform that can take heterogeneous regulatory documents and turn them into structured, traceable knowledge for retrieval and reasoning.

  • Designed the end-to-end document ingestion pipeline that converts arbitrary source material into structured knowledge graphs with provenance for GraphRAG and auditable regulatory answers.
  • Worked across the product stack — Django APIs, asynchronous Celery workflows, PostgreSQL/Supabase, Neo4j, frontend integration, authentication, and data contracts — to move ingestion from pipeline to user-facing capability.
  • Built validation and QA stages around AI-assisted extraction so documents, entities, relationships, and citations remain inspectable instead of becoming an opaque embedding dump.
  • Supported production infrastructure and delivery across Docker, Kubernetes, Redis, object storage, monitoring, and the interfaces used by internal teams and customers.

Red Tape Index / indices as a service

Owning the path from public source to published index

I helped build RTI as an end-to-end data product: global acquisition, cloud infrastructure, statistical methodology, APIs, authentication, dashboards, and the visual layer used to explain the results.

  • Implemented the cloud foundation in Terraform and AWS: Prefect orchestration on ECS/Fargate, S3 data storage, IAM boundaries, containerized workers, Postgres/Supabase, retries, monitoring, and repeatable deployments.
  • Operated more than 2 billion production requests while acquiring government and industry data across the Americas, Europe, and Oceania from APIs, PDFs, spreadsheets, dashboards, and browser-rendered portals.
  • Co-developed index methodologies with data scientists, applying statistical normalization, weighting, aggregation, sensitivity analysis, and reproducible bronze → silver → gold scoring with full provenance.
  • Built backend and frontend product surfaces including data APIs, AWS Cognito/SES authentication, account gates, rankings, analytical dashboards, and interactive visualizations for data-center, permitting, patent, media, and regulatory studies.
  • Turned heterogeneous public records into versioned data products whose sources, transformations, scores, and published claims can be traced and tested end to end.

The crawler sleeps. That is when the source changes schema.

Customer-facing web-data engineering: diagnosing, repairing, and operating production crawlers that delivered billions of records from sites designed to block them.

Client delivery & operations

Owning the crawler after it reaches production

I worked directly with clients to translate broken coverage, missing fields, blocked traffic, and delivery problems into production fixes — then verified that the expected data actually arrived.

  • Managed Scrapy Cloud projects end to end: deployments, scheduled jobs, concurrency, logs, stats, exceptions, item validation, crawl health, and feed exports to customer S3 buckets.
  • Debugged and repaired client spiders under live delivery pressure, using logs and extracted data to separate access failures from parsing, pagination, schema, and pipeline defects.
  • Partnered directly with customers on requirements, incidents, data quality, coverage, and delivery expectations while keeping crawler changes measurable and production-safe.
2.2

Anti-bot & distributed crawling

Getting reliable data through hostile access layers

I built and optimized Scrapy and Zyte API pipelines at a scale where bans, session state, rendering cost, retry storms, and silent data loss were operating concerns, not edge cases.

  • Bypassed IP and session bans, fingerprinting, JavaScript challenges, rate limits, and browser-only flows with proxy rotation, cookie and session management, browser rendering, adaptive retries, and request-level diagnostics.
  • Operated crawling portfolios above 30 billion annual requests, including individual client workloads reaching 2 billion requests per month on distributed infrastructure.
  • Balanced unblock rate, throughput, completeness, latency, and infrastructure cost while preventing successful HTTP responses with empty or malformed items from passing as good data.
  • Scaled containerized crawlers with Docker and Kubernetes and maintained resilient output pipelines from extraction through validation and S3 delivery.

Valid HTML with empty data is still broken.

Development Coordinator

Jul 2024 — Feb 2025

Owning the system and the delivery around it

Promoted to lead development while remaining hands-on across the architecture and codebase.

  • Owned project organization, system architecture, delivery scheduling, and hiring for the development function.
  • Ran weekly alignment with the board and CEO, translating operational priorities into technical sequencing and accountable delivery.
  • Kept architectural decisions close to implementation instead of turning coordination into status-report middleware.
3.2

Software Engineer

Sep 2023 — Jul 2024

Replacing rented automation with owned infrastructure

Designed the internal platform that coordinated RPAs, integrations, and vehicle-data collection instead of relying on isolated scripts and paid orchestration tools.

  • Architected a full-stack orchestrator with Express, Next.js, and PostgreSQL on RDS for REST/SOAP integrations and RPAs running on AWS Lambda and S3.
  • Removed roughly 4,500 hours of manual work per month, improved operational efficiency by 40%, and reduced automation costs by 50% by replacing paid third-party orchestrators.
  • Built vehicle-data extraction pipelines handling more than 500,000 daily requests to keep automotive records continuously current.

Good automation is the one nobody has to remember to run.

Automation & operational intelligence

Making the robots visible to the people using them

  • Automated repetitive workflows with Selenium and Puppeteer, saving more than 500 work hours annually.
  • Built BI dashboards in Power BI and GoodData plus NestJS and React reporting systems.
  • Reduced processing time by 70% and gave operations faster, data-backed feedback on what was happening.

Before AI, we called it a script. It worked too.

04 / services

Data engineering, from source to product.

Based in São Paulo, with experience working remotely with teams in Brazil, the United States and Ireland. These are the problems I work on.

Web scraping and data extraction

I build and operate Python, Scrapy and Zyte API crawlers for websites, APIs and documents. Validation, monitoring and delivery pipelines turn unstable sources into data teams can use.

Zyte: operating and repairing production crawlers ↗

Data pipelines and cloud platforms

I develop ingestion and transformation pipelines with Prefect, AWS, S3 and PostgreSQL, with infrastructure managed through Terraform. Traceable bronze, silver and gold layers make datasets reproducible and easier to maintain.

RTI: acquisition, AWS infrastructure and traceable indices ↗

Document ingestion and regulatory intelligence

I structure regulatory documents for knowledge graphs, GraphRAG and analytical data products. Provenance and quality checks help teams trace answers and indicators back to their sources.

Skills I give my agents.

Drop-in folders that teach a coding agent to do one job well. Synced from the public repo, so the email always carries the latest list.

06 / contact

Got a weird data problem?

Even better if it involves an unstable public source, a hostile PDF, or enough scale for the obvious solution to stop working.
